Overriding Plate Deformation and Topography During Slab Rollback and Slab Rollover: Insights From Subduction Experiments

چکیده

Some subduction zones in nature show mainly overriding plate (OP) extension and low topography, others shortening elevated topography. Here we investigate how end-member modes (trench retreat with slab rollback trench advance rollover) affect deformation (OPD), topography mantle flow time-evolving three-dimensional fully-dynamic analog models using particle image velocimetry (PIV). We conduct two sets of experiments, one which is characterized by retreat, the other advance. Experiments showing continuous experience overall OP extension, while experiments dominated shortening. Both present fore-arc intra-arc extension. Our indicate that OPD driven horizontal at base inducing a viscous drag force (FD), determined gradient shear rate d?????/dx, controls trench-normal FD. Furthermore, large-scale trenchward tilting an subsidence are observed landward uplift during long-term The types different can be ascribed to downward component upward flow, respectively, thus represent forms dynamic provide possible mechanism for Makran zone. The dynamics of double slab subduction

S U M M A R Y We use numerical models to investigate the dynamics of two interacting slabs with parallel trenches. Cases considered are: a single slab reference, outward dipping slabs (out-dip), inward dipping slabs (in-dip) and slabs dipping in the same direction (same-dip). Where trenches converge over time (same-dip and out-dip systems), large positive dynamic pressures in the asthenosphere ...

A Review of the Role of Subduction Dynamics for Regional and Global Plate Motions

3 DOI 10.1007/978-3-540-87974-9, © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009 Abstract Subduction of oceanic lithosphere and deep slabs control several aspects of plate tectonics. We review models of subduction dynamics that have been studied over the last decade by means of numerical and analog experiments. Regional models indicate that trench rollback, trench curvature, and back-arc deformation m...

Andean flat-slab subduction through time

The analysis of magmatic distribution, basin formation, tectonic evolution and structural styles of different segments of the Andes shows that most of the Andes have experienced a stage of flat subduction. Evidence is presented here for a wide range of regions throughout the Andes, including the three present flat-slab segments (Pampean, Peruvian, Bucaramanga), three incipient flat-slab segment...

Trench migration and overriding plate stress in dynamic subduction models

S U M M A R Y On Earth, oceanic plates subduct beneath a variety of overriding plate (OP) styles, from relatively thin and negatively buoyant oceanic OPs to thick and neutrally/positively buoyant continental OPs. The inclusion of an OP in numerical models of self-consistent subduction has been shown to reduce the rate that subducting slabs roll back relative to the equivalent single plate model...

Great earthquakes and slab pull : interaction between seismic coupling and plate^slab coupling

Great earthquakes, the few largest earthquakes that account for most of the Earth’s seismic energy release, have occurred at only a few subduction zones around the world. Strong locking, or ‘seismic coupling’, of the interface between plates at certain subduction zones is often invoked to explain these great earthquakes. Although past studies have correlated strong seismic coupling with a compr...
